Thank you to everyobe at the Halifax Women’s Institute for raising £1000 for WomenCentre. Maxine attended the January meeting to accept the cheque on behalf of WomenCentre and spoke about the services we offer empowering women.
Local groups supporting us to raise much needed unrestricted funds really helps us to support women and their children in an holistic way. If you would like to organise a fundraising event or activity for us please get in touch or email maxine.edwards@womencentre.org.uk
The WI President ,Amanda Rosewell said “Halifax Women’s Institute is a thriving group of women from across the Halifax area. With over 60 members, they meet on the 1st Wednesday in the month at the Maurice Jagger Centre in the evening. Their main meetings are supplemented with are broad range of small Sub Groups: Dining Club, Book Club, Walking Club, Coffee Club to name but a few.”
Halifax Women’s Institute runs the Tea Tent in Halifax Show, which is their main fundraising event for the charities they support each year. The women also run 2 stalls in the Woolshops Shopping centre, where they sell cakes and crafts together with a lucky dip and the famous ‘jar-bola’!
The three main purposes of the Women’s Institute are:
• to advance the education of women and girls for the public benefit in all areas including (without limitation): local, national and international issues of political and social importance; music, drama and other cultural subjects; and all branches of agriculture, crafts, home economics, science, health and social welfare.
• to promote sustainable development for the public benefit by: educating people in the preservation, conservation and protection of the environment and the prudent use of natural resources and promoting sustainable means of achieving economic growth and regeneration.
• to advance health for the public benefit, and to advance citizenship for the public benefit by the promotion of civic responsibility and volunteering.
Whilst the Halifax WI are currently at their capacity for the room at the Maurice Jagger Centre, other groups across the area are keen to welcome new members, there are several groups across Calderdale.
If you are interested, email @WYF WIs, and the ladies at the West Yorkshire Federation will point you in the right direction.”
