Welcome to our first blog
WomenCentre aims to #choosetochallenge across all our work whether that is locally regionally or nationally. We challenge on behalf of the women we support to improve the quality of their lives. This challenge can take many forms from challenging decisions that impact on women’s lives to challenging nationally via our involvement in consultations and ensuring the voices of the women we support are heard.
International Women’s Day is a significant day in the calendar for WomenCentre, because it is an opportunity to spread awareness and show support for all women in society. International Women’s Day, celebrated on the 8th March, is a global day, celebrating women’s achievements and raising awareness around discrimination women may face. This day is truly important so please look at our posting on social media and get involved with this event. Any support is truly appreciated.
In case you haven’t heard about us before WomenCentre is a women’s organisation based in West Yorkshire. We offer a wide range of services from both our Calderdale and Kirklees bases and also offer some services in Bradford too. Please do have a look at our website www.womencentre.org.uk to see what services we offer. Predominantly our services focus on the wellbeing and safety of the women we support and we pride ourselves in always making sure that the women we support feel that we have listened to as they often begin to take small steps to seek help.
WomenCentre receives a wide range of funding via contracts and grants to deliver our services but we also rely on donations too from people who want to contribute to make a great difference. This can be by becoming a member, a corporate supporter, making a one-off donation or donating essential items e.g. toiletries for us to give to women. We always say that ‘If every woman in Calderdale and Kirklees was a member we would never need funding again’
Women often talk about the difference our support has made to their lives:-
‘I really appreciate your support. You have helped me every time when I was in lots of stressful situations and directed me to get to the right places.
The group helped improve my confidence and self – esteem and develop a sense of identity.’
Introducing Angela our CEO
Angela Everson, the CEO, focuses on defying the stigmas women face who reach out, and she highlights the importance of empowerment for women and has a holistic approach to the charity. Angela states how every day working for Women Centre is different, and she links this to the International Women’s Day how we #choosetochallenge. It is truly important to challenge limitations and be there for those in society who are most vulnerable and at risk. Angela has been recognised for her hard work and commitment to Calderdale and WomenCentre at the 2020 Community Foundation for Calderdale Community Spirit Awards, when she won the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Of the staff and volunteer teams at WomenCentre Angela says: –
‘We have incredible staff members, volunteers and board members who work extremely hard, and who have a true passion and commitment to our work. In 2020 during the pandemic the staff and volunteers did everything they could to keep our work going, and I am so proud of them all.’
