I am Maxine and I work on the Communications, Marketing and Fundraising at WomenCentre. This year, during the pandemic, we have faced new challenges with our work with women. Over the year WomenCentre has taken on new technology, supporting women remotely and online fundraising. Some of these positive ways of working have been developed and will help the organisation continue to move forward to support the women we work with.
In this, our second blog I will look at: Membership; Corporate Support; and our International Women’s Day Fundraising. I will also tell you about our Sound Women Event and our new book from the Mothers Apart Common Threads Collective ‘I had to dig deep’.
WomenCentre is proud of its supportive membership of over 300 women and regular donors. These additional income sources all help us to provide extra support to women and support our contracts. Membership is currently at £10 a year (£2.50 unwaged or low income), although this is currently being reviewed and is likely to increase slightly later in the year.
If every woman in Calderdale and Kirklees was a member we would never need funding again!
We offer 3 levels of support. Join us today and play a vital role in supporting women locally. Receive newsletters, invitations to events, recognition on our website and more. Contact Maxine at WomenCentre to discuss membership further or click here
Lots of organisations and individuals choose to work with us at WomenCentre and this year our supporters have gone the extra mile to help raise awareness and funds. Some innovative fundraising ideas around our International Women’s Day Celebrations this year too including:
• Full Circle Funeral Care raising over £2k online to buy back packs for women when take them to new accommodation and refuge.
• A member walking 35 miles for WomenCentre 35th Year and raising over £3k
• Little Miss Electrical donating profits from sale of hoodies to WomenCentre raising £100
• Suma Food – online quiz raised over £200
• An evening with Sally Wainwright raising over £3k
• Donation of £1000 from Todmorden Arts Group
• Arcade Coffee and Food in Huddersfield raised over £100 selling waffles

All of our supporters do a fantastic job and every £10 we get makes a huge difference and can help transport someone to safety. Thank you to everyone. If you have any ideas or want to get involved in some fundraising contact Maxine at the centre or click here for more information.
In my role I also share some of the fantastic work that happens at WomenCentre to help raise awareness about the work we do . Our Mothers Apart – Common Threads Collective Project recently published a book ‘I had to dig deep’, the illustrated special edition which explores mothers’ lived experiences of separation from children during the COVID-19 pandemic is available from our Huddersfield office.
Our Annual Sound Women Event went online this year. The music festival was a great success. Lisa Luxx joined us from Beirut and Holly Macve joined us from Brighton. 62 women attended enjoying an evening of poetry, music, words and dance. Very Uplifting. Some of the music is available on the website is written and performed by women at WomenCentre.
