What is counselling?

Our counselling service provides you with a regular time and place, each week, to think and talk about how you are feeling. 

You might want to talk about

  • Difficulties you are experiencing in your life at the moment.
  • What has happened in the past
  • How the past affects your thoughts, feelings and behaviours now.

The counsellor will help you make connections between the past and present and explore how you respond to current difficulties.

We offer weekly session of 50 minutes, with the same therapist at the same time and day of the week.  We initially offer up to 10 sessions, depending on your needs.

Can counselling help me?

Counselling may help you with:-

  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Low self-esteem and self worth
  • Lack of confidence
  • Managing stress
  • Coping with the effect of abuse as a child or adult
  • Understanding your relationships and developing more healthy ones.
  • Coping with loss such as bereavement, relationship breakdown or unemployment
  • Self harm
  • Addictive behaviours
  • Managing feels such as shame, anger, guilt

How do I access the counselling?

To access our counselling service, please complete the counselling referral form 3.  If you are new to WomenCentre you will also need to complete a New Contact and Information Sharing form and return these with your counselling referral form to

Once we receive your referral you will  be contacted by the counselling coordinator for an initial discussion to explore whether counselling will be appropriate and useful for you.  If counselling is appropriate you will join a waiting list; waiting times are currently around 3- 6 months.

Our counselling service is provided by a dedicated team of therapists, with a wide range of experiences, backgrounds and expertise. We will match you with the counsellor that best suits your needs.  All our counsellors are volunteers; some are qualified while others are still in training. You can be assured that we require very high standards of therapeutic competence, and all our counsellors receive a high level of support to carry out their roles.

How much will counselling cost?

WomenCentre offer a low cost counselling service that is based on your income:-

Under  £10,000                           £5 per session

Under £15,000                            £10 per session

Under £20,000                            £15 per session

Over £25,000                              £20 per session

You will be asked to indicate which is applicable to you on your referral form.

Please note no one is refused counselling because of their financial situation –if the lowest cost (£5) is not affordable and is a barrier to you accessing our service please let us know on your referral form and we can agree a lower fee (between £1 and £4).

Private Practice counselling

The demand for our counselling service outweighs our capacity and the waiting list is generally around 6 months from referral, depending on the client’s flexibility in terms of time.

We also offer a private practice service which is charged at a standard rate of £40 a session.  This does not mean that the queue is jumped, or that those who are unable to pay have to wait longer, as all clients seen under this service are additional to our low cost counselling service.  If anything, it reduces that waiting list by removing clients who can afford to pay.  All proceeds go towards supporting the work at WomenCentre and helping to increase capacity, improve our service and eventually reduce waiting times. All Counsellors for our private practice counselling service are fully qualified.


Cancellation and non-attendance policy

If a session is cancelled  more than 24hrs before your appointment, the session is lost and counts as one of the 10 sessions. It does not need to be paid for.

If a session is cancelled less than 24 hours before your appointment, the session is lost and counts as one of your10 sessions; you will be asked to pay for this session

If you do not attend without letting us know, your counsellor will phone to check how you are; the session will be lost and you will be asked to pay for it.

If you cancel two sessions less than 24hrs before your appointment or do not attend two session your contract will be terminated.

If the Counsellor cancels the session, you will not be asked to pay and it will not count as one of your 10 sessions.
