When women come together amazing things happen. This has been so true at WomenCentre for so many years. A local charity supporting over 100,000 women over the last 40 years. Women Supporting Women! That is what it is all about.
Thanks to the University of Huddersfield, Liz Town Andrews and Nikki Hill, WomenCentre was picked as the charity for The Women in Business event held a few months ago at the John Smith Football stadium. This led to toiletries & scarf donations from The Huddersfield Giants. I had the chance to speak about the amazing work the charity does across Kirklees Calderdale and Bradford but most importantly the connections made through this event is crucial in our development.
The stories from WomenCentre resonated with others and some women joined us as members. As is all too common WomenCentre had some women who needed to access services on the day. Others connected to collaborate and work together offering something back to empower other local women and support them on their recovery journey.
One such person was Robina Shah of Roshah Designs. Robina started her cultural greeting cards business way back in 2019. The idea was planted in her mind many years before Robina’s husband sadly passed away from Leukaemia in 2014. It was after this difficult time Robina decided to carry on the idea of her husband and approached the Card Factory and now her cards are stocked on various sites and stores including Card Factory, Thortful and Moonpig. Creativity and focus helped her with her loss.
Robina was also asked to deliver sessions about her business model at Leeds City College and after doing some workshops with Level 1 students at the College she found she thoroughly enjoyed this and wanted to develop this further so she went on to study her PGCE at University Centre Leeds part time alongside running her business.
She approached WomenCentre at the Women in Business Event with the idea of a creative workshop with women to give back to others. She came and met with us and delivered a workshop showing that everyone can be creative and everyone’s work can be used in card design and more. The women loved the session but so did Robina, she was blown away by the creativity of the women and has vowed to further develop more workshops to help more people with health, mental health and wellbeing in their healing and recovery journey.
“Keep Creating, keep shining and most of all, keep being your amazing self” Robina’s message to everyone.
WomenCentre’s message. There are so many benefits to networking, especially with such a large network of women like Women in Business, everyone has a story, everyone is on a journey and everyone is healing in their own way.
Together we can achieve amazing things.
